Abstract:
This thesis explores the enhancement of the Aube's glazed heritage in-situ, i.e. located directly in public spaces, and focuses in particular on self-guided tour systems. It proposes a (retro)design framework based on five macro-functions to understand and design these devices: discovery, access, transmission, engagement, reasoning. To enable visitors to acquire skills that can be used again and again (in the medium term and in other contexts), we have chosen to design systems that make use of the stories behind each stained glass window. In this way, we can offer visitors the opportunity to recognise the elements of each work on the basis of reusable content (the stories), thus covering the wide geographical presence of this heritage. Three experiments, based on back and forth between the field, theory and design, confirmed the need to support visitors in: linking the physical and documentary space, associating content with the corresponding part of the work, linking subjects and representations, and remobilising knowledge. The experiments have also shown that stories can help to acquire and reuse heritage skills, and that the proposed framework makes it possible to design a system. However, it is crucial to have a variety of stories to satisfy the diverse expectations of visitors.
