LL2A Founders

The LL2A is part of the Troyes University of Technology (UTT), and as such both benefits from and contributes to the research at UTT. All research at our University is structured within the research units, which brings together researchers from engineering, information sciences and technology, as well as social sciences.

UTT research
Researchers within the research participate in:
  • high-level scientific activities in their field of research, often in partnership with other research centres and economic stakeholders,
  • interdisciplinary synergies to set up large-scale high-level transversal programmes.
One of the objectives of the research is to develop multidisciplinary research between its engineering and social sciences teams.

M2S team - technical, social and ethical complementarity
The M2S team of the UTT research, of which the LL2A is part, innovates in the field of health and autonomy at home, by complementarily combining surveillance and safety of socio-technical systems, applied to the safety of individuals within the social and ethical framework of ageing and self-reliance. Researchers design, develop and validate precise measurement tools that are integrated into everyday objects: bathroom scales for fall prevention, the Grip-ball to assess muscular capacity, or a mobile phone to monitor physical activity. These Ambient Assisted Living technologies are augmented everyday devices, which both fit into the home environment and practices, and communicate wirelessly and automatically with data processing systems. Alerts can be triggered when risk levels specific to a particular user are exceeded. Research is dedicated both to the technical performance of the alert for prevention, and to the wider use context: who exactly receive the alerts (doctor, family caregiver), and how useful are they really (e.g. unnecessary anxiety linked to false alerts of falls)

Acceptability of technologies
In collaboration with members of the Tech-CICO team of the UTT research, the LL2A contributes to developing conceptual reflection and applied research around the acceptability and the usability of technology. For example, an important part of LL2A’s recent research is dedicated to the acceptance of social robotics and general user experience of Human-Robot Interaction.
On its side, Tech-CICO has many years of experience in the ethics of usage, especially applied to the elderly. In line with the team’s work on online communities and health networks, Tech-CICO has recently initiated research focused on social support and more specifically on the media to implement it. The aim is to contribute to research on the use of participatory technologies related to coordination by acting on three levels: the implementation of an action research approach combining social and computer sciences; the definition of a working model of mediated social support activities; the development of innovative services.

LL2A Partners

LL2A was created based on the identification of a true need at a regional level for ageing well, and more generally issues around health and ageing. The Living Lab benefits from the active support of public and local authorities, as well as donor companies, on different levels.

The financial support of the Aube departmental council (Conseil Départemental de l’Aube), the Troyes City agglomeration (Troyes Champagne Métropole), Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (Ministère de l'enseigement supérieur, de la recherche et de l'innovation) and the Grand Est Region (Région Grand Est) are highly visible. While the investment funds for the technology platforms have also been provided by these authorities, day to day functioning of LL2A is funded by the organizations listed below, be they donors, research partners or clients. CCAS de Châlons en Champagne.

Collaborative research

Since its founding in 2013, LL2A has strengthened its international visibility in the field of health and autonomy of the elderly, through the collaboration in various European projects and industry-academia partnerships. In particular, LL2A’s research is internationally recognized concerning the design and evaluation of socially assistive mobile robotics, in terms of acceptability of social robots in residence homes, and Human Robot Interaction criteria, like usability and accessibility.

These last years, LL2A has been involved in several collaborative research projects, whether publicly- or industry-funded, at European or local levels.

  • EU research projects: PaeLife (AAL) ; ECHORD++ CLARC (FP7) ; Health in Smart Rurality HIS2R (Interreg)
  • ANR (national) research projects: PRuDENCE
  • Regional / local research projects: SeeIt; NextRPA; SmartArt; FrailCoach; Responsabilité Populationnelle
